A word from our midwife:
Our society has very thoroughly normalized the idea that birth is a dangerous and complicated process that requires medical intervention in order to go well. And yet, the reality is that most pregnancy and birth is normal, low risk, and uncomplicated. Our bodies are as capable and expert at growing our babies and facilitating their births as they are at any of the other automatic and natural (not to mention complicated and precise) functions that they perform every moment of every day: beating our hearts, digesting our food, running the amazing center that is the brain…the list may actually be endless. It’s an amazing journey to come to feel as confident in our bodies’ ability to wake us up in the morning and store all of our memories and drive a car and circulate our blood as we are in our capacity to create and give birth to new life. Because pregnancy and birth is such an inherently natural and normal process, gentle and natural modalities of healthcare are a well-made match for supporting the normal, gentle, and natural work that our bodies are doing in growing and bringing our babies.
We hope you enjoy the information and resources on those alternative healthcare options that we’ve compiled here, and that you find them helpful in gaining the support that is the right fit for you.

What is a doula & how can your family benefit from having one?
A doula is a woman who is trained to assist another woman in non-medical ways during childbirth & who may provide support to the family after the baby is born in what is sometimes called 'The 4th Trimester.'
Birth Doulas offer physical, emotional & partner support during labor and have been proven to significantly reduce the chances of interventions occurring.
Postpartum Doulas are trained to work with the family & to provide practical, emotional & sibling support, as well as evidence-based information & resources to new families as they go through a period of adjustment to life with a new baby.
If you are considering hiring a doula for your upcoming birth or postpartum period, we would love to answer any of your questions & share our resource list.
